Q&A with Ruth Tansey, gut health specialist

How would you describe yourself (and what you do):

I’m a Gut Health Specialist, I love to help people recover from digestive issues as I know how debilitating they can be. I suffered for over 20 years with dreadful IBS that wasn’t alleviated by the medical profession. I managed to restore my health through natural medicine and went onto qualify as a Nutritional Therapist, Colon Therapist, Wellbeing Coach and Yoga Therapist.

I believe my approach working with both the physical and emotional elements that go hand in hand with poor gut health are what get the results
for my clients.

What is your favourite thing about your life/career?

Making a difference to people’s lives. It’s truly rewarding to see the transition in often just a matter of weeks, from someone feeling exhausted, bloated and uncomfortable to feeling energised, light and happy.

How do you define wellbeing?

Wellbeing is multifaceted and relates to the overall quality of a person’s life. When we think about wellbeing, we have to take into account many different aspect from mental, emotional and physical wellbeing to social, economic and spiritual wellbeing.

To have wellbeing in all areas of our lives takes a lot of consideration and generally there will be one, two or more areas at one time or other that will be far from perfect. Acknowledging these shortfalls and working towards improving them is paramount to achieving a state of wellbeing. I often use coaching techniques on myself when I feel I’m heading down a
rabbit hole. It’s too easy to get caught up in negative vibes and let things spiral out of control.

What is your advice to people who want to improve their wellbeing?

First off, it’s important to acknowledge where you are and what you need. We are all uniquely different beings and what is right for one won’t be right for someone else.

STOP comparing yourself to others, this is a ‘negative’ trait and no good will come from it. Embrace your uniqueness, look to others for support and advice and surround yourself with people who are a positive influence. Move your body daily, exercise is crucial for wellbeing, and getting out in nature is good for the soul.

Eat plants, think fibre, fibre, fibre, it is fibre that will feed your gut and restore your health. If you are struggling with a sense of purpose, work with someone to help you understand more about your values and beliefs so that you can find greater meaning in life.

Do one thing for yourself each day that will bring a little joy into your life. Improving wellbeing is a continuous process, and small, consistent steps can lead to significant positive changes over time. I’ll be at UFEST with samples of some of my delicious gluten free plant based sweet and savoury treats just in case you wondered if you can have tasty healthy food!

If you could choose to do/be anything for a day, what would it be?

I would choose to explore the wonders of the world such as visiting a vibrant coral reef, hiking through a beautiful rainforest, or witnessing the Northern lights. I love adventure and being out in the elements, exploring the beauty and diversity of our planet firsthand. I have a deep appreciation for nature and the importance of preserving it and I love being active so the combination of physical activity awe-inspiring scenery and the
chance to learn and appreciate different ecosystems would make for an unforgettable and enriching experience and if I could throw in a safari that would be just perfect! I think I may need time travel!

What is your pet peeve?

People littering the streets and not picking up their dog’s poo!

Do you have a family motto or life lesson you would like to share with us?

I have always tried my best to live by the motto “Treat others as you would wish to be treated” I grew up in a very lovely and positive family and my mum and dad were very strong on respect for others and treating everyone as equals.
