It's January. Christmas is over. The decorations are down. The nights are dark and the weather is completely uninspiring. You feel utterly exhausted and you're not alone.
It’s so common to feel low in energy at this time of year. You might ask yourself; is it seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D.)? Is it depression? Or is it just life?
The only surefire way to know the answer to that is to see your GP. So, if you have been feeling low for a month or more, then now is the time to book that appointment and go and speak to your GP.
For everybody else, here are some ideas to help you survive the next few weeks and start to recover some energy.
Befriend daylight
Natural light boosts our mood and helps to regulate our body clock. Set yourself a daily target to get outside, starting with just 15-30 minutes per day. Every little helps, especially early in the day. Can’t face getting outside? Sit near a window while you drink your morning coffee instead.
Make exercise non-negotiable
I hear you. Exercise is the last thing you feel like doing when you’re exhausted. I promise you though, it will be worth it. Benefits include improved energy and mood. And “exercise” doesn’t need to be a full hour workout. It could be a 20 minute walk. Some yoga (Yoga with Adriene and Yoga with Kassandra are two of my favourites). Or even a Dr Chaterjee inspired 5 minute workout.
Healthy Diet
When we’re tired it is so easy to fall into the habit of grabbing convenience and high-sugar foods. The problem with this is it leads to energy spikes and crashes that make us feel even worse. Instead, opt for foods that provide sustained energy levels. Incorporate complex carbohydrates like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables into your meals. A favourite of mine is to add a teaspoon of nut butter, some frozen mixed berries and a teaspoon of seeds to my morning porridge. Delicious and warming on a winter morning.
Mindfulness and Relaxation
Stress can be one of the biggest drains on our energy levels. Incorporate relaxation techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or even a warm bath to reduce stress and increase your energy. If you’d like a guided meditation, click here for a free body scan meditation download.
Connection is King
Engaging with friends or loved ones can uplift your mood and energy. Schedule regular catch-ups via phone calls, coffee dates or activities with friends to stay connected despite wanting to hibernate. Even a short chat can provide a mood lift so pick up the phone and schedule some meet-ups now.
What do you need most?
The best way to make changes is to start small. So if you want more energy right now, look at the ideas I’ve shared above and choose ONE to commit to today. Which will you choose?
