An interview with… Sian Lloyd

Sian Lloyd is a familiar face to many. A news presenter, trained lawyer, and journalist, we thought we'd put her in the hot seat...

What do you wish you could tell your 20-year-old self?

You never know where life will take you! Aged 20, I was studying for a law degree at university. I had secured sponsorship for my next stage of education at Law College and had a trainee placement at a top London law firm lined up. A future career in law seemed sorted!

Five years later I was a rookie reporter working my way up the ladder in a small newsroom at a local radio station, back in my hometown of Wrexham!

After completing my legal education and training I decided that a career in corporate law was not for me, and took the decision to follow my dream of becoming a journalist. It’s a decision that surprised many of my family and friends but one that I have never regretted, and my law degree has helped me in my job in a lot of ways.

I would also remind myself to take more photos!

Would you share some of your favourite moments with us?

Many of my favourite moments are rooted in the sea-side town of Criccieth in North Wales. All my childhood holidays were spent there at my grandparents home, and some of my earliest memories are of long days on the beach swimming and fishing in rock pools. It led to a life-long love of spending time outdoors, exploring the natural environment and being active.

Many family milestones have been celebrated there and the minute that the car rounds the corner bringing the Castle and Bay first into view will always be one of my favourite moments. Time to switch off and unwind with long walks, sea-air and a G&T as the sun sets.

What are you looking forward to this year?

I’m looking forward to making the most of every opportunity in 2023! 2022 was my first full year in the freelance world and it was a busy time of making new contacts, developing ideas and building networks. I worked with some amazing creative teams, presenting a series for S4C, appearing in a show on Channel 5 and presenting live news programmes on Radio Wales.

I also chaired a range of conferences for both private and public sector organisations and hosted a number of Award Ceremonies, it was lovely see people back out and about celebrating their teams achievements!

This year, I’m excited to say, will see me working on more TV projects and I’m also looking forward to helping more organisations effectively get their message across and learn how to engage with the media. Storytelling has always been a big part of my work as a journalist and I’m pleased to help others tell their story through media training work. Hopefully I will also get time to spend in Cheshire and North Wales!

Please would you share some interesting things, people or events that have had a big impact on what you do.

During my career as a journalist I’ve been fortunate to meet many interesting and inspiring people. It’s been a privilege to tell their stories and many have made an impact on me personally.

Someone who I never met, but whose story has inspired me, is Lady Rhondda. A woman who was born into wealth but who used her position to fight for the rights of women. She was also a journalist, and did things few from her background would have dared. As a suffragette, she made the fight for the vote front page news after being sentenced to prison for setting fire to a post box. She also confronted the then Prime Minister, H.H. Asquith. Lady Rhondda continued to fight for the rights or women throughout her life and became one of the greatest global businesswomen of her time. I would have loved to have had the chance to interview her!
