I was recently sent some drinkable vegan collagen to test, from the mineral experts at Wassen. Here's what I would say...
We’ve reviewed the products from Wassen before and liked what we discovered, especially the Digest + Balance for the festive over-indulgences. Having said that, the supplements I do take are capsules. I find them much easier and I don’t tend to forget to take them, which always helps.
When the package from Wassen arrived, I was very interested in the whole concept of a) the benefits of collagen (so many people are chatting about it, what works, what’s overpriced) and b) vegan collagen, so here goes.
First, what is collagen?
A protein that your body makes that is important for healthy skin, bones, and joints. (It makes up body parts like tendons, ligaments, skin and muscles.) But, as your body ages, not only is it harder to make collagen but the collagen you have begins to break down. Enter, the decision to take collagen supplements…
Second, what are the benefits of taking collagen?
After a good old natter with friends (in the wellness field and outside) and a good old search on some trusted reference points here are some science-backed health benefits.
- Better skin. Collagen contributes to skin strength, elasticity and hydration so as your body produces less you can develop dry skin and wrinkles.
- Suppport joint and bone health. As the amount of collagen in your body decreases, you are more likely to suffer from painful joint issues, like osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.
- Maintaining a healthy heart. Collagen provides the structure for your arteries, and keeps them from narrowing.
- Healthy hair and nails. This one is bit less definite, but there is too much out there to ignore a mention.
And now, for the review of Wassen Beauty + Collagen.
The sales pitch:

The details:
Boosted with 1,000mg of Vollagen®, plus premium botanicals including Green Tea and Bamboo Extract, plus 11 vitamins and minerals.

Vollagen® is a complex of amino acids provided in the same proportion as those found in collagen, but the amino acids are already in their most bioavailable form, making them easy to absorb. The amino acids are 100% plant-derived, making them suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
The review:
I had a two week supply, taking one sachet with 500ml of water every day.I’m not a hundred percent sold on the flavour, raspberry and lemon, but I ended up mixing it with a little less water and having it more as a shot to down before setting up at my desk for the morning.
After about day 5 I definitely (as opposed to may be looking for something that wasn’t there) noticed a subtle difference – my skin appeared smoother and brighter. I’m not sure about plumpness, as I already have what I affectionately call ‘hamster cheeks’ but I can vouch that Wassen Beauty + Collagen made a difference, evident after around Day 10 when a random stranger in Waitrose commented on my skin.
Wassen Beauty + Collagen is £17.99 for 14 x 5.5g sachets from Wassen and Amazon.
