Review: Glasnock House, Lochcarron

We love a good home away from home, and in search of snow, headed up to the Scottish Highlands this winter. Packing the car and new roofbox to the brim with family and Christmas presents we set off from Chester for what would be an 8 hour drive. We knew that, not just from trusted sat nav but also, so it turns out, the owner used to live around the corner. And had fond memories of the journey with her family.

Stopping every couple of hours to break the journey, swap drivers and cater for the inevitable toilet stops. On this note, we would highly recommend Tebay Services in Cumbria, great bacon butty!

Arriving at 5pm, via a stop at the local store in Strathcarron it was dark when we got to our home for the next week, so it wasn’t until the sun rose the next day that we could truly appreciate where we were.

In the meantime, we explored inside. Glasnock House was completed in 2011, so I’d describe it as a modern country manor house, complete with all the modcons (like underfloor heating, that it was hard to tear the dog away from) and equipped with all the praticalities you would need for exploring the countryside (heated rails for clothes, dog towels, wood store…)

With three spacious bedrooms and a bright, open-plan living area, it’s designed to make you feel right at home. ‘You are in the country but nothing is too much trouble’, that kind of feel. The kitchen is well-equipped, the dining area invites laughter over meals, and the lounge—with its wood-burning stove—is perfect for relaxing after a day out. Plus, those huge windows? They’ll have you soaking in some of the most stunning loch and mountain views imaginable.

Nature at Your Doorstep

Whether you’re fishing for brown trout at the loch, strolling through the estate’s vast grounds, or spotting deer nearby, Glasnock House immerses you in the magic of the Highlands.

Most things do close down over winter but there is so much for nature lovers to do. The sense of seclusion is a highlight—you won’t find neighbours here, unless you count the stag, sheep or Fish Eagles. It’s just the soothing sounds of nature, the babbling stream leading down to the loch and your own slice of paradise.

There are plenty of walks from the house and clear instructions left by the owners. However, we were quite taken with a mere meander down to the loch. (And by we, I mean it was only myself and our OAP Border Collie – it was like she had a new lease of life, who braved the weather on some days, whilst the rest of the family watched is from the comfort of the fully-equipped gym!)

One adventure we did go on as a family was to a Highland Cow Walking Tour in Diurnish. Booked via Facebook Group, we couldn’t have been made more welcome as we had a private walk, talk and pamper of the coos. All with the stunning changing scenery looking across to the Isle of Skye inthe background. Happy memories made!

Things to do

There’s a whole page on the website dedicated to things you can do whilst staying at the house. And the owner is always on hand if you have any questions. Some things that are on our list for next timeinclude the seafood at Kishorn Seafood Bar, the fish and chips at The Applecross Inn and a visit to Lochcarron Weavers (makers of gorgeous interior goodies that bedecked Glasnock House).

Why Glasnock House?

This is more than a place to stay—it’s a place to reconnect with yourself, your loved ones, and the beauty of the world around you. For an unforgettable Highland escape, Glasnock House ticks all the boxes: comfort, privacy, and a truly spectacular setting.

See you soon Glasnock!
