Some places make an impression the moment you arrive. Others quietly win you over, until you find yourself looking at flights home wondering when you can return.
St Peter’s Bay in Barbados was very much the latter.
We’ve been fortunate enough to stay in some beautiful hotels over the years, but when we were reminiscing recently about our favourite places, St Peter’s Bay kept coming up in conversation. So much so that we thought it deserved a place on G&J The Edit.
More Like a Beachfront Home Than a Hotel
The first thing that struck us was that it didn’t really feel like a hotel. Our three-bedroom apartment felt much more like a beautifully designed beachfront home that just happened to come with all the benefits of a luxury resort.
There was no grand marble reception or formal check-in. Instead, we were welcomed by a genuinely friendly team before being shown through impressive double doors into what can only be described as our home for the week.
The apartment was wonderfully spacious, with two guest bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, open-plan living space and a master bedroom that opened directly onto an enormous terrace overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It was one of those views that instantly slows your breathing.
..And then there was the bikini lift. Quite possibly one of the best inventions we’ve ever encountered on holiday. It takes you directly from your apartment to the pool and beach, meaning there’s no soggy shuffle through corridors wrapped in a towel. It sounds like a small thing, but by day two we were wondering why every beachfront hotel hadn’t thought of it.
In truth, we barely wanted to leave the terrace. It had everything we needed; a dining area, comfortable seating, a jacuzzi and uninterrupted views across the beach below. Listening to the waves from bed each evening wasn’t bad either.
Barbados Knows How to Help You Relax
One thing Barbados does exceptionally well is making you feel completely at ease. Within hours of arriving we’d swapped work conversations for discussions about snorkelling, beaches and where to find the best rum punch.
The atmosphere at St Peter’s Bay reflected that perfectly. Relaxed without ever compromising on service. Helpful without feeling over-attentive. Everyone seemed genuinely pleased you were there.
Food Worth Staying In For
One of the unexpected highlights of our stay was the food. Chef Daniel’s passion was infectious and it showed in every dish.
Rather than complicated fine dining, the focus was on fresh, seasonal ingredients and letting Barbados shine. Burrata with peppery rocket and sun-dried tomatoes, beautifully fresh local fish landed that morning and simple flavours executed brilliantly.
For my husband’s birthday, the team arranged a private dinner in our apartment. It turned what could have been just another holiday meal into one of those evenings you remember long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase. And it’s the sort of thoughtful touch that says a lot about a place.
The Barbados We Love
Of course, there are plenty of ways to fill your days. The calm waters are perfect for paddle=boarding, kayaking and swimming, while snorkelling with turtles is an absolute must. In fact, the general manager joined us on that particular adventure, which somehow summed up the relaxed, welcoming feel of the whole place. Seeing the turtles glide effortlessly beneath the surface was every bit as magical as you’d imagine.
For someone who generally prefers looking at the sea to swimming in it, I surprised myself by happily spending hours in the water. The waves are wonderfully gentle, and there was something rather lovely about exchanging a friendly wave with people strolling along the beach as we floated just offshore. It felt less like staying at a resort and more like becoming part of island life for a little while.
We also gave paddleboarding a go. I use the phrase “gave it a go” quite loosely, as I spent most of my time on my knees or unintentionally paddling in circles. Still, there are far worse places in the world to learn. Seeing the turtles glide effortlessly beneath the surface was every bit as magical as you’d imagine.
If you’re visiting Barbados for the first time, we’d also recommend venturing beyond the resort.
One of the highlights of our trip was spending time with local guide Orman, whose knowledge of the island brought Barbados to life in a completely different way. From the history behind the island’s name to stories of its railway, wildlife and culture, it reminded us that every destination has so much more to offer than simply beautiful beaches.
Why We’d Go Back
Luxury means different things to different people. For some, it’s thread count. For others, it’s Michelin stars. For us, increasingly, it’s how somewhere makes you feel.
Looking back, what stays with us isn’t just the apartment or the view. It’s the warmth of the people, the easy conversations, the laughter after unsuccessful paddle-boarding attempts and the feeling that nothing was ever too much trouble.
Years later, it’s still one of the Barbados stays we recommend most often. And that’s probably the biggest compliment we can give it.
