Leading UK Plastic Surgeon blames Love Island and social media filters for the image obsessed generation...
In an interview with journalist and entrepreneur Nicola Sands, on the Success Means Business podcast, leading plastic surgeon Andrea Marando did his first ever media interview explaining why he thinks the industry is booming because of reality TV and social media.
Andrea Marando is a plastic surgeon based in Manchester and has been a doctor for over 30 years; following a career which has seen him work at the Marie Curie Cancer Institute in Paris and gaining a Fellowship in Breast Reconstruction at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan. He thinks the rise of plastic surgery and non-surgical procedures is due to the image-obsessed generation.
“We didn’t grow up having a phone in our hands. Now our children can take photographs, videos and upload them so everybody’s become a video maker or a content creator.
He explained that he didn’t get a digital camera until 2001 and he certainly didn’t have a camera when he was at university.
“The moment you are in front of a camera, in front of your image a lot more you tend to scrutinize a lot more. And the moment you are in front of other people’s bodies and other people’s faces you always start to compare what you do like and what you don’t like.
“On top of that there are plenty of filters and filters can modify the way you look without you having to go through that surgical step… think this does create a lot of insecurity because the parameters of beauty have changed.”
He goes onto explain how body types have changed from voluptuous bodies in renaissance Italy to the supermodels in the 1990s then to androgynous very thin unhealthy models to the reality TV stars of today.
“A lot is based on body image so the models (these days) tend to have a six pack, big shoulders and a nice bicep. If you look at tv programmes like Love Island or On the Beach with the Ex now the men and women have usually a fantastic physique. It is very unlikely that we will see someone who is tremendously overweight and that is the new target everyone seems to be aspiring to.”
Nicola Sands, former ITV journalist and now founder of award winning north west production company Applehead Media has launched a brand new series of business themed podcasts that uncovers exactly what makes successful business leaders tick and this is episode two.
Success Means Business is focused on navigating the road to success by featuring a range of high-profile guests who talk openly about the personal and business challenges they have faced to reach the very top of their industry. Nicola Sands podcast host and founder of Applehead Media said: “It was fascinating to speak to Mr Marando, he’s had an incredible journey to reach the top of his industry. I was particularly curious to know how he manages the expectations of his clients in a world that seems vainer than ever.”
