Why every woman should think about getting acupuncture…

An ancient Chinese practice, acupuncture is surrounded in myths, it's time to dispel them and embrace the benefits.

Over the last decade thousands of patients have crossed my clinic threshold with a huge range of health problems. Out of these, consistently it was women who I could see benefitted the most and responded the best to acupuncture, whether it was from hormone imbalance symptoms, anxiety or just fatigue.

Yet still, I feel so many women are hesitant at the thought of acupuncture so here are some reasons why it is worth giving it a go, I have thousands of patients who certainly didn’t regret it…

Acupuncture can be used to help with anything you might go and see your GP about – it’s a one stop shop.

Women today are busier than they ever have been before and often health niggles are ignored until they can’t be ignored.

Acupuncture can treat a wide range of health challenges including back pain, general aches and pains, infertility, fatigue, shoulder pain, insomnia, anxiety, hot flushes, foot pain and digestive problems. Many of my patients arrive with a list which we tackle together not allowing small health problems to become big ones.

Most acupuncturists will want to hear all the detail about all your symptoms so they can find a pattern to help their diagnosis and therefore help you feel better. There is definitely no “one symptom one appointment” rule which many GPs enforce today.

Acupuncture is natural, holistic and works with the body which is particularly helpful for hormones.

Acupuncture is designed to affect your whole body. Aiming to treat both your immediate health problems and, often more importantly, the underlying root cause. Hormones are clever things when in balance but can be life impacting when out of balance. Acupuncture is designed to work completely with the body offering a non-pharmaceutical solution to help to regulate hormones.

Acupuncture has amazing side effects.

The aim of acupuncture is to prompt the body to do what it knows how to do. Whilst patients may come for a specific reason such as neck pain, they soon experience other additional positive side effects such as better sleep or reduced period pain.

There is nothing to be afraid of – lots of patients who come regularly and benefit from treatment are needle phobic.

At the first treatment many patients soon realise that the hair thin sterile disposable needles acupuncturists use are specifically designed to be as painless as possible. The majority of patients are not even aware where or when the needles have been inserted.

There is a growing body of evidence-based clinical research to support acupuncture’s effectiveness.

Day to day I see how acupuncture and herbs can change lives for the better and increasingly there is a whole body of research to support that it works. In fact, more and more GPs are recommending it to their patients. Acupuncture is now recommended for certain symptoms by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.
