A simple guide to growing beautiful tulips from bulbs.
Plant in November once the weather has turned cold. They don’t start putting down roots too early and the colder weather prevents viral and fungal diseases in the soil which might affect the bulbs.
Dig a trench about 4 times the depth of the bulb.
Line the trench with grit to enhance drainage. No bulbs like sitting in water.
Plant the bulbs close together (imagine an egg box). This gives a better display and helps support the bulbs.
Cover with soil and label. Squirrels like tulips so if you have them in your garden, cover your planting area with netting until they start to shoot.
