Regular Book Club contributor, Bookworm and her 10-year-old son review a selection of their latest reads

The Person Controller by David Baddiel
Son: This is an amazing book for ages 8-12. It is action-packed with all sorts of adventures and mysteries but told in a humorous way. I really loved this book; I hope you do too.
Mum: David Baddiel, what more can I say? Book smashed within one week, inspiring us to get the next one from the library immediately!

Kick by Mitch Johnson
Son: This book is based in Jakarta with a boy called Budi and he loves football. One day after working in the factory he goes out to play football and when he goes to score the ball it rebounds off the post and smashes the most dangerous man in Jakarta’s window. He must steal a pair of boots to regain himself from the incident, will he make it and what will happen next? Read to find out.
Mum: This was a more challenging read, but so important to read about different cultures. Should I be worried that the dangerous man was the inspiration for the World Book Day costume?

Kay’s Marvellous Medicine by Adam Kay
Son: It’s a funny, well-written book about medicine and the body throughout history. It’s gruesome, gross, funny, and informative. I also liked the first book (Kay’s Anatomy) and think it’s a great way to get any child reading an educational but hilarious book. Recommended for ages 9-13.
Mum: I didn’t read this one myself but Young Bookworm delighted in sharing the most gross passages. Both Adam Kay books are recommended – you’ll find your little ones learning despite themselves!
