We Tried the Pott’d Candle Making Kit (And Became Weirdly Competitive About It)

What started as a wholesome family craft activity somehow turned into three people taking candle design extremely seriously.

We recently tried the Pott’d Home Pottery Candle Making Kit after spotting it during one of those late-night “this could be fun” scrolling sessions.

And it turned out to be one of those genuinely lovely things to do together that manages to feel creative without becoming stressful. Which, when involving a husband and a seven-year-old, is not always guaranteed.

The idea behind the kit is simple: you sculpt and create your own candle holders using air-dry clay, before pouring your own candles once they’ve set. The kit is designed for beginners and includes everything you need, from clay and tools to wax, wicks and instructions.

Our Creations Became Surprisingly Personal

Somewhere along the way we ended up making:

  • a koala/bear hybrid situation
  • a cactus candle complete with tiny match holder

Which sounds chaotic, but actually came out far better than expected.

I think that’s part of the appeal of Pott’d in general. It doesn’t feel overly “crafty”. You don’t need to be artistic. It’s more about the process than perfection.

Although I will say… once everyone starts making their own design, a certain level of competitiveness does emerge.

Everything Is Included (Which We Appreciated Deeply)

One of the best things about the kit is how well thought-through it feels.

Everything arrived beautifully packaged and very organised, with all the tools included rather than expecting you to somehow own specialist pottery equipment already.

That sounds like a small thing, but it makes a huge difference when you’re trying to do an activity without stopping every five minutes to search drawers for things.

The Instructions Require… Interpretation

The video tutorials were helpful overall, although there were definitely moments where we paused, replayed and collectively decided to “just freestyle it slightly”.

Particularly when it came to shaping and drying timings.

But oddly, that almost added to the charm of it. It felt less like following rigid instructions and more like figuring it out together. And because the clay is forgiving, nothing ever felt like a disaster.

A Surprisingly Good Family Activity

I can absolutely see why these kits do well as gifts.

They sit somewhere between, a craft project, an experience gift, a rainy day activity, and a genuinely quite stylish home décor when finished

Which is probably why we enjoyed it more than expected. There’s also something quite satisfying about lighting a candle you made yourself, even if the holder is technically “slightly abstract”.

Would we do another one? Definitely.

Partly for the candles. Partly because the seven-year-old is now convinced we should apparently become “a pottery family”. Which feels like a slippery slope.
