A Visit to Le Manoir

Nestled in the heart of Oxfordshire, Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons Oxford has earned a reputation as an epitome of culinary excellence. Beyond its fantastic restaurant the gorgeous gardens and cookery school really beckon those with a passion for food, nature, and gardening.

On arrival you are greeted with a glass of fizz – and we chose the local Hundred Hills English Sparkling wine, which we sipped whilst enjoying a tour of the gardens, famous for their lavender which borders the paths that cut through the lawns and down to the orchard. Statues are everywhere, including a tribute to Raymond’s Maman in the herb garden who is reputed to have taught him his core cookery and gardening principles.

The kitchen garden, whilst a feast for the eyes in the Summer, was not at its most productive in late October – the soil was being conditioned for the 2024 season. However, the polytunnels were full of micro salads.

The orchard contains many French/British Heritage varieties and there is a Bee Village. Agronomists who have created vineyards in France are currently advising on an area to plant specially grafted vines to cope with the Oxfordshire climate and pests and diseases. Things never stand still at Le Manoir!

The garden is also a real retreat where you can enjoy a leisurely walk, relax with a book, or simply soak in the tranquility while sipping a glass of wine from the restaurant’s extensive wine selection. Garden rooms have private seating areas where you can enjoy the scent of roses.

In the evening we experienced the delicious 7 course tasting menu at the restaurant offering dishes that showcase the finest seasonal ingredients, accompanied by the Classic Wine Flight. It’s a truly fab opportunity to relish the masterfully crafted dishes by the restaurant’s expert chefs. Pre dinner drinks are served in the bar and lounge area with roaring fires.

This picturesque and complex garden bursts with the vibrant colours and fragrances of herbs, fruits, and vegetables that are used in the restaurant’s seasonal dishes. In addition, there is a Japanese garden with beautifully sculpted topiary, combined with the Autumnal pinks and reds of Japanese maples. We were encouraged to explore, and you can even join a guided garden tour to learn more about the importance of sustainable, farm-to-table practices.

Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons  Cookery School offers an array of hands-on classes, each designed to cater to different skill levels, from novice cooks to seasoned chefs. We did the Treasures of the Sea cookery course.
