There’s a very specific kind of evening that starts with good intentions. “We’ll just watch one thing.”
You sit down, snacks in hand, scrolling endlessly through Netflix, Prime, Disney+, all of it… only to land back on something you’ve seen before. Not because there’s nothing new, but because sometimes you just want something familiar. Easy. Reliable.
Which is how, more often than not, we end up back at Harry Potter.
And it turns out we’re not alone.
The Comfort Watch Is Real
New research (from the clever people at Zen Internet) suggests that Harry Potter is officially the UK’s most re-watched film franchise, with nearly a third of us returning to it again and again.
There’s something about it, the music, the characters, the predictability of knowing exactly what’s coming, that makes it the ultimate “what shall we watch?” solution.
Close behind are the usual suspects: Jurassic Park, James Bond (which always leads to who is the best Bond? Sean Connery hands down, in case you were wondering), Toy Story and Star Wars, all films that feel like a safe bet when decision fatigue kicks in.
Because sometimes, a “new release” feels like too much commitment.
The Oscars Effect (We’ve All Done It)
Then there’s the other side of the coin the “we should watch something worthy” mood. The kind that creeps in after awards season.
Apparently, one in three of us are influenced by the Oscars or BAFTAs when choosing what to stream, which explains the sudden urge to revisit Titanic (still topping the list), Forrest Gump or The Shawshank Redemption.
You start the evening thinking: “Let’s watch something acclaimed.” And end it wondering why you’re crying over a film you’ve already seen five times. (Mentioning no names here!)
The Real Star of Movie Night?
What’s changed most isn’t what we’re watching, it’s how we’re watching it. The research shows that WiFi now matters more than TV size (a ‘discussion’ had with husband now has back-up, thank you!) when it comes to the home cinema experience.
There is nothing, NOTHING, worse than the screen freezing just as something big is about to happen. Whether it’s dinosaurs, disasters or dramatic declarations of love.
So… What Are We Actually Watching?
If we’re honest, most evenings fall somewhere between intention and reality.
We start with options.
We scroll.
We debate.
We say, “No, not that, we’ve seen it.”
And then we press play on something we absolutely have seen before. Because sometimes, after a long day, what you really want isn’t something new.
It’s something you don’t have to think about. Something comforting. Familiar. Easy.
And if that happens to be Harry Potter for the tenth time… we’re not judging.
