Blanketscaping: The New Trend for Summer Picnics

Ok, so we’re already familiar with the joy of tablescaping but this summer, there’s a fresh outdoor twist that’s capturing our attention: blanketscaping.

Think of it as tablescaping’s laid-back cousin swapping the dining table for a picnic blanket, and transforming even the simplest alfresco lunch into a stylish summer ritual. It’s not rocket science, and really it’s just tablescaping under the open sky but we liked the sound of it so we asked Zoe Turner, Head of Brand Development at Denby, to help us perfect your setup and dine outdoors in style.

A picnic setup featuring colorful cushions on a wooden surface near water, with a bowl of salad, a plate of appetizers, toasted bread, and a glass of white wine.

1. Lay the Foundation

Every memorable picnic starts from the ground up (literally!). Begin with a generous blanket (or layer a couple together for a relaxed, communal vibe). Fabrics like cotton, wool, or fleece are ideal soft enough to lounge on, yet durable (and practical) enough for the great outdoors in Britain.

Avoid light tones that show every grass stain and stray berry, and instead opt for machine-washable materials that are made to last. Bonus points for blankets with carry handles or handy pack-away pouches.

2. Set the Mood

This is where we are told the magic happens. It’s about creating a space that invites people to relax, stay a while, and really enjoy the moment.

Layer your base blanket with scatter cushions, a throw or two, and a few seat pads for comfort. We love pairing a neutral base with soft pastels or warm, earthy hues. Add a little bunting, a linen napkin or two, and a small vase of garden flowers for that effortless, hand-touched look.

And as the sun begins to dip, there’s nothing more magical than a few twinkling fairy lights (love a good fairy light), or LED tealights in jam jars. And a portable speaker playing soft tunes adds a final flourish.

3. Plan a Crowd-Pleasing Menu

Food-wise, think fresh, unfussy and shareable. Bite-sized frittatas, stuffed pittas, or flaky pastries from your favourite local bakery are always winners. Dips like hummus, tzatziki, and beetroot spread served with flatbreads or crackers create easy grazing moments.

If you’re feeling inspired, pull together a picnic board with cheeses, fruits, olives, and rustic breads. For something more interactive, go potluck-style and invite guests to bring a dish.

Drinks-wise, fill a flask with iced tea, homemade lemonade, or even a chilled spritz if it’s adults-only. And don’t forget something warm for the cooler moments a simple thermos of tea is always appreciated.

4. Ditch the Disposables

There’s something inherently stylish about saying no to single-use. Linen napkins, beeswax wraps, and glass or ceramic containers not only look better, but they’re kinder to the planet too. We’re big fans of Hokan Bowls in case you missed our previous rave review and they’d be perfect for this. Choose reusable cutlery (bamboo or stainless steel works beautifully) and opt for ceramic plates or chip-resistant stoneware. For more ideas, we’ve rounded up our favourite picnic plates too.

A wooden board or platter can elevate even the simplest food into something Instagram-worthy. And honestly, there’s nothing quite like eating off something that feels considered and crafted.

So next time the sun shines, grab your blanket, call your friends, and take your dining al fresco but do it with a little style.

We’ll be over here, layering linens and fluffing cushions in the grass…
