Applehead Media co-founder Nicola Sands has been recognised at the She Inspires Awards for her mission-driven approach to storytelling and change.
It was a night that celebrated courage, creativity and women who are quietly changing the world — and one Altrincham-based filmmaker was firmly in the spotlight. Nicola Sands, co-founder of Applehead Media, has been named Person With A Mission at the She Inspires Awards 2025, one of the UK’s leading celebrations of women’s achievement and impact.

Held at Bolton Wanderers Football Stadium, the glittering black-tie ceremony welcomed more than 600 guests, with hundreds more joining online. The awards shine a light on women whose actions both big and small create meaningful change, and Nicola’s story is one rooted in resilience, reinvention and purpose.
Reinventing in the Face of Change
Nicola was recognised for successfully transforming her career during a challenging period for the television industry, pivoting into digital production and founding Applehead Media’s dedicated studio. Today, she works with brands and organisations to create authentic, powerful video storytelling that goes far beyond marketing aiming instead for real-world impact.
One recent project saw Applehead Media produce a hard-hitting film for utilities company Network Plus, highlighting the abuse faced by road workers. The campaign not only raised national awareness but led to tangible outcomes: all four workers featured were later honoured with Heroes Awards for courageously sharing their experiences.
“Opportunity, Impact and Meaningful Change”

Accepting her award, Nicola spoke about what the recognition meant to her and the values that drive her work.
“I feel truly honoured and grateful to win the Person With A Mission award,” she said. “She Inspires is an incredible community, and I’m proud to be part of a network that champions opportunity, impact and meaningful change — values that drive everything we do at Applehead Media.” She Inspires founder Gulnaz Brennan echoed this sentiment, describing each winner as part of a wider circle of inspiration that connects local stories to global audiences.
Storytelling With Purpose
Founded in 2007 by Nicola and her husband Stephen, Applehead Media brings together decades of experience in television, journalism and filmmaking. The studio is known not only for its technical expertise but for its commitment to innovation, diversity and telling stories that matter — a mission that feels more relevant than ever.
As nominations open for the She Inspires Awards 2026, Nicola’s win is a timely reminder of the power of purpose-driven work and of what can happen when creativity meets conviction.
