What do you think? Is self-love just for hippies?
I am going to tell you… it’s absolutely not! (Unless I am unknowingly a hippy, which is definitely possible!)
In my eyes, self-love is essential for everyone. And I mean true, unconditional self-love.
NOT self-love only if you meet certain criteria like;
Only loving yourself when you look a certain way.
Or when you behave a certain way…
Or when the house is tidy…
Or when other people are kind to you…
Or when your kids are behaving…
Or when you do well at work…
Or when some other criteria is met.
I mean the sort of self-love that includes loving ALL of yourself, flaws and all. Here’s why…
Self-love allows you to feel good about yourself
Everyone deserves to feel good about themselves. And when you truly love yourself, you achieve this. It means you cut yourself some slack when you make a mistake. Or when things don’t quite go to plan. And that means you’re less likely to beat yourself up or to waste time ruminating. Which in turn means you are more present… to notice the good things in life, to enjoy time with your loved ones, and to make the choices that help you be the person you want to be.
Self-love enables you to take action
When we love ourselves, and feel good about ourselves, everything seems easier. The barriers to action are smaller. We believe in ourselves and our ability to overcome challenges. We no longer lose time to rumination. Instead, we decide to do something and we do it. Consider this for a moment… Are you more likely to go out for a run if you’re busy beating yourself up for the fact that it’s 5pm and you still haven’t done it? Or are you more likely to go if you truly love and feel good about yourself, despite it already being 5pm?
Self-love means you are more likely to set and hold boundaries
Because when we love ourselves, we know our value. We know how we want to spend our time and energy. And when you truly love yourself, you know that no matter how the other person responds to the boundary, you are still a good person.
Is all that just for hippies?
I’ll let you decide!
