Skincare for babies

When we think of baby skin, we think of incredibly soft, plump, perfect skin. However, despite phrases such as ‘as soft as a baby’s bum’ often being used, baby skin is often very sensitive and easily irritated, leading to bumps, rashes, dryness, and discolouration.

Just like us, our little one’s skin often needs a little bit of love to keep it happy, healthy and protected. With newborn, and toddler skin often being more sensitive, it’s important for us parents to know exactly what is in the products we are using on their delicate bodies.

Unlike us adults who often have a cupboard full of lotions and potions, our little ones only need a handful of staple products and a three-step skincare routine to keep their skin silky smooth!

Step 1 – Wash

In the same way that we like to unwind and enjoy a bubbly soak in the bath at the end of a busy day, so do our little ones. So, pop on their favourite nursery rhymes, run a bath, and pop your little bubble-07 in because it’s about to get cleaned up in here.

Babies love bubbles. What they don’t love though is harmful and stripping ingredients like soap and SLS. A lot of commercial baby washes or baby soaps are made with these and can strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it high and dry – so watch out for those.

Look for natural cleansers, coconut-derived or glucose-derived, that are milder on the skin than one concentrated cleanser alone.

Once your little one has splashed around and is squeaky clean, it’s time to give their hair a good wash too. Who would have thought that such little hair could get so dirty? Look for something with Milk Protein to keep baby strands smooth and healthy, perfect for untangling mashed bananas and washing away the dirt from the mud pies made earlier that day.

Step 2 – Protect

Skin that’s as soft as a baby’s bottom is as sensitive as one too and all parents know, the nappy area is one of the crankiest patches of them all – the culprit? Nappy rash.

Infrequent nappy changes, new foods, antibiotics, or simply excessive friction are all everyday, and often unavoidable, things that can cause a nappy rash in little ones. It’s incredibly common and important to address the cause and not just the symptom.

After your bub is all freshly washed and smelling divine with no traces of dinner or dirt, apply a protection and prevention Nappy Balm all over their little bottom.

Step 3 – Moisturise

The final step in your little one’s skincare routine is to moisturise. Once they’re all dry from their bath, lather a lightweight moisturiser all over their little faces and squishy limbs (obviously avoiding the eyes). Again look for natural oils, like Evening Primrose and Olive Squalane, and gorgeous healing naturals like Allantoin, Aloe Vera & Honey.

We all love to be pampered so why not end your little one’s day with a baby massage whilst applying the moisturiser? They really do live the life don’t they…

The best part about the massage is not only will it help make sure their skin is moisturised and super smooth, but it is also a perfect time for bonding and even helps them unwind and relax ready for a good (and hopefully uninterrupted!) night’s sleep.

End the moisturising massage with a nice big squeezy cuddle and a bedtime story before smothering your little one in kisses before they go to bed.
