Opinion:This is, without a doubt, the most frustrating book I have read in a very long time. I might go so far as to describe it as marmite, you’ll either love it or hate it and for sure my Book Club was split!
You might remember those Quest books from your youth. You read a few pages, then have a decision to make, each decision takes you to a different page, a different journey, and ultimately a different ending. I loved those books but I can neither confirm nor deny that if I didn’t succeed the first time I went straight to the end and worked backward.
This book is a grown-up version with the usual Midsomer-style ‘harmless murder’ but sadly lacking Inspector Barnaby. It’s quite a fun read, the sections are very short between decisions (typically only one page) so it’s fast paced and you do have to read it in one sitting if you want to remember why you ended up where you did. It does get a bit dull rereading the same pages to head off on a different path and there isn’t much information in the short sections to help you make those decisions so I suspect there is an element of luck involved.
So why the frustration? Well, despite several attempts (and multiple deaths and reincarnations) I still have no idea who dun it! Yes, I will also admit I did eventually go to the end and the savvy author has thwarted my attempt to cheat!! I sense there is a spreadsheet to track the decisions in my future…
