How to spruce up a bunch of daffodills or tulips from your supermarket

  1. Daffodils ooze a slimy sap that is toxic to other flowers/foliage so trim the stems to the preferred length and leave in water for 2-3 hours until the stem ends have sealed. They can then be mixed with other plants.
  2. Tulips continue to grow after arranging so place lower in the arrangement. 
  3. Spring foliage to pick from your garden is often woody, so snip the bottom of the stem to increase the uptake of water.
  4. To arrange in a vase, put the foliage in first, followed by flowers, then spikes, ie the branches. Consider the position of the arrangement and the viewing angles.
  5. To arrange in a bowl, add a ball of chicken wire for support. Arrange the foliage first to set the shape and cover the bowl. Then add interest over and above.
