Screen Time, Sorted: The Best Tablets for Kids (Tried and Test by a Real Dad!)

little girl holding a tablet

Let’s be honest—when it comes to screen time, we all start out with the best intentions. I was that dad once: “No screens before three!” Fast forward to a rainy half-term, a very inquisitive six-year-old, and a long drive to Cornwall—and guess what? A tablet quickly became my best friend.

That said, choosing the right one can be a bit of a minefield. You want something safe, educational, durable—and ideally not the price of a small car. After a bit of trial and error (and a lot of snack bribery), here’s what’s worked for us.

1. Amazon Fire HD Kids Edition

Our current favourite

We started with this one and honestly, it’s hard to beat for value. The Fire HD Kids Edition comes with a chunky, kid-proof case that’s already saved us from more than a few disasters (jammy fingers, tiled floor incidents… you name it).

Why we love it:

  • Comes with a 2-year worry-free guarantee (seriously, if your child hurls it down the stairs, Amazon just replaces it).
  • 1-year free subscription to Amazon Kids+, packed with age-appropriate books, games, apps and videos.
  • Parent dashboard: You can control screen time limits, set educational goals, and filter content. It’s surprisingly easy to use—even for tech-wary parents.

📍 Top tip: Get a microSD card to expand the storage—especially if your little one loves downloading EVERYTHING.

2. iPad (with kid-proof case)

💸 Not my personal go-to—but a great fit if you’re already in the Apple club

Okay, cards on the table: I’m not a massive Apple fan. I’ve always found their stuff a bit pricey for what you get. But if you already use iPhones or have a MacBook floating around at home, then an iPad can be a really smart choice. It just… fits.

Why it works (especially for Apple families):

  • Seamless syncing with your existing devices—handy if you’re using Family Sharing or Screen Time controls.
  • Huge range of high-quality educational apps—my daughter loves interactive storybooks and drawing tools.
  • Top-notch performance and screen quality, so it’ll last a few years (and then some).

📍 Heads-up: You’ll need to buy a kid-proof case separately, and they’re not cheap. But they are essential. Trust me.

3. LeapFrog LeapPad Academy

🎓 Perfect for young kids and first-time tablet users

This makes a great “starter tablet” maybe when they are around 3, and we have friends who wax lyrical about it for little ones. It’s more like an educational toy than a full-blown tablet, which honestly gave some peace of mind that you’re doing this parenting thing right.

What we liked:

  • Everything is preloaded, kid-safe and educational—no worrying about ads or accidental purchases.
  • Great for early learning: phonics, maths games, problem solving.
  • Doesn’t need to be online all the time, which is great for car journeys or tech-light homes.

📍 Downside: It’s a bit slower and clunkier than a “real” tablet, but for 3–5 year olds, it’s perfect.

No tablet will ever replace good old-fashioned outdoor play, LEGO towers, or reading books snuggled up together—but sometimes, especially on long trips or rainy weekends, a bit of screen time can be a real life (and sanity) saver.

My advice? Don’t stress the screen guilt. Pick a tablet that fits your child’s age and your family values, and set clear rules from the get-go (our daughter knows it’s strictly “tablet time” after tea and not before school—unless there’s a maths game involved!). But if I had to pick one, I’d go with the Amazon Fire Kids Edition—it’s affordable, safe, and does exactly what you need it to.
