Snowdrops are the highlight of any winter landscape...
Snowdrops, or Galanthus nivalis to give them their Sunday name. ‘Galan’ and ‘anthus’ from the Greek words for milky and flower, and ‘nivalis’ which is Latin for snowy.
They appear at the end of January and are at their best naturalised and wild, nestled on riverbanks or at the base of hedgrows. In garden settings it is satisfying to see them appearing within the grass or tucked amongst the borders.
If you are looking to introduce some into your garden area, then it is best to plant them green in February and March. It is also the best time to divide your clumps and spread to encourage naturalisation.
