The Power of Pets

The Power of Pets

59% of households in the UK own pets, that works out at 17 million households. Why? Because of how they make us feel...

#1 COMPANIONSHIP

Our pets are always there for us. They seem to know when we are feeling a bit rubbish and that all we need is a wet nose in the lap or a paw on the knee. What’s more, they are great listeners providing that much-needed comfort and companionship helping us live mentally healthier lives, and relieving loneliness and depression.

What’s more, dogs are a particularly steady companion, their love for you is unwavering and unconditional. As friends or lovers come and go, they will still be by your side, through thick and thin and with lots of slobbery snuffles and cuddles.

#2 EXERCISE

They get us out of the house, even in Lockdown or on the greyest day. Not only does this mean exercise and fresh air, calming a stressed mind perhaps, it means meeting other dog owners, which can be the only interaction some people get, especially in this day of working from home.

Having set times for walks not only means a break from your house or desk it means adding some routine to an otherwise potentially unstructured day. Adopting healthier lifestyle habits, like a regular walk in the park, makes us feel good, physically and mentally.

#3 THERAPY

It has been proven by the people in white coats, that stroking and playing with your pet reduces stress, raising our levels of serotonin and dopamine; our natural calming and happy hormones. So much so that dogs are being used in therapy sessions helping children with autism and ADHD as well as with those developing dementia, with amazing results.

So, whether you are a self-confessed stressed Eric or a calm on the surface but panicking underneath kind of person, the emotional support from a four-legged friend can be immeasurable. Any animal lover knew this anyway, but it is official now so no excuses.
