From childhood ballet memories to business breakfasts and race day glamour, this month our newest columnist reflects on the power of connection and how new adventures, shared experiences, and a simple smile can open unexpected doors.

Hello! I was genuinely thrilled to be invited to write for G&J. It’s a magazine I love reading, but I must admit it feels a little strange being the one telling my own story, rather than someone else’s! That said, I’m excited to share a few snapshots from my life and career and this month, it’s all about the power of connection.

May has been a whirlwind, full of work, events, and memorable moments that reminded me just how important our networks are, both professionally and personally.

For over 25 years, I’ve worked as a journalist and presenter. It’s a world where contacts are everything. Knowing the right person to call (and quickly!) has always been part of the job. These days, working freelance, I’m exploring new networks and opening the door to different projects and collaborations. I’m loving where they lead.

The month began with a brilliant business breakfast hosted by Theatre Clwyd at the William Aston Hall at Wrexham University. The focus? Social impact, a subject close to my heart. Walking into a room of unfamiliar faces can be daunting, but I’ve learned a smile and a friendly “hello” over coffee and croissants can work wonders. We’re all there for the same reason, after all.

Being back at the William Aston brought back fond memories of where my ballet class performed our Christmas shows when I was a child. I played a snowflake and a forest fairy, which was the high point (and end point!) of my ballet career at the age of 8!

Back to the present, one of the most inspiring moments from that morning was a Q&A with the team behind the charity We Mind the Gap. Their work providing opportunities for young people is extraordinary. I’ve had the privilege of seeing it in action at my old school in Wrexham, where I recently met some amazing girls who’ve completed their programme. Hearing their stories, and seeing their confidence shine, was truly moving. I left with a full heart… and a delicious donut!

Food featured again at the Wales Food and Drink Awards in Llandudno, a glamorous celebration of the country’s most innovative producers. From small start-ups to household names, it was an evening filled with flavour, fun, and plenty of business card swapping. After hosting the awards, I raised a glass with the winners and finalists, hearing about their new ideas and partnerships was a real treat.

And speaking of treats, I finally experienced a day at Chester Races, and what a day it was! Sunshine, fizz, fabulous outfits, and the best company in Parade. The team at Chester Racecourse went above and beyond, even providing a make-up artist to keep us all glowing! A special thanks to the lovely Louise at Get Ahead Hats in Wrexham, who helped me solve the classic conundrum: hat, fascinator, or headpiece? Who knew there were so many options?

It was a day of fun, fashion, and forging new friendships and a reminder that the best connections often begin with shared experiences and open hearts.

Here’s to more meaningful moments and unexpected opportunities. I can’t wait to see where the next adventure takes me.
